Look for an up-tempo style of play from the Shelton High girls basketball team this season.

“I think we have a pretty quick team,” head coach Joe Cavallaro said after an early-December preseason scrimmage. “We’re not very big. We’re going to have to play a full-court game.”

Shelton went 11-6 in Southern Connecticut Conference a year ago. The Gaelettes posted a 13-7 regular-season record and 14-9 overall mark, reaching the second round of the Class LL state tournament.

Shelton is led by captains Sarah Skoronski, Casey O’Connor and Kathryn Arena. Junior Kayla Resto and sophomore Kayla Resto are key players who are expected to help fill voids left by three graduated starters.

“We want to try to improve. Hopefully we can get better as we go along,” Cavallaro said. “We have good kids. They work hard, they’ll compete.”

The players want to build on last year’s success and go deeper into the postseason.

“We definitely want to improve upon last year and keep getting better,” O’Connor said. “I’m really excited to be back with the team. I’m looking forward to the season.”

Tough teams Shelton will face include Career, Sheehan and Mercy, the latter of which ended Shelton’s season with a second-round state tourney victory after it defeated New Britain in a first-round clash.

The Gaelettes have been working together in preseason practices and scrimmages, including matchups with non-conference teams Masuk, Newtown, Trumbull and Seymour.

“We have a great group of girls,” Arena said. “We’re all excited to work hard and see what we can bring to the table this season.”

The regular slate is set to tip off on Monday, Dec. 12, when FCIAC team Westhill of Stamford visits for a 7 p.m. game.
