New Haven is the second-largest city in Connecticut with a population of about 130,000. Most people know New Haven as the home of Yale University, and it's a beautiful little college town worth visiting.

Believe it or not, though, you can’t spend all your time in New Haven. At some point, you’ll want to get out.

While most people are figuring out how to get back on an airplane post-Covid, why not try a couple of great family-friendly day trips from New Haven?

Where? Let's take a look at a couple of day trip ideas!

Boston, Massachusetts

Boston is about a 2-1/2-hour car trip from New Haven. If you get an early-morning start, you can be there well before lunchtime. There are so many things to see in Boston that you'll have to make some choices. A few family-friendly options include:

  • Old Ironsides and the USS Constitution Museum in Charlestown
  • Paul Revere House and the Old North Church
  • The Freedom Trail - a 2.5-mile walk that encompasses 16 historically significant sites
  • Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum
  • New England Aquarium

Want to give the kids a taste of history while keeping it fun? These are some great places to visit.

Old Ironsides in Charlestown is the oldest warship in the world still floating. The kids' imaginations run wild amongst the tall masts, cannons, and miles of rigging. After they've seen the ship, take them next door for some hands-on activities at the USS Constitution Museum.

The ship is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. while the museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Due to Covid restrictions, it's best to call before going to ensure the ship and museum are open. Go aboard the ship for free and gain admittance to the museum with a donation.

Mystic Connecticut

Want to keep your traveling in Connecticut? How about a short, one-hour drive up to Mystic? If you've never been, it's worth checking out and it's an easy day trip.

Are your kids a little older and looking for some adventure? In Mystic, you can make it a day at the Fields of Fire Adventure Park.  You'll get three hours of climbing for $59 per adult and $51 per kid.

With obstacles and zip lines, everyone is sure to have a blast. Find Fields of Adventure Park about five minutes outside of downtown Mystic at 715 Noank Ledyard Rd. Make sure you book ahead because they're operating by appointment only right now.

When you're done climbing, take a leisurely stroll through seaside Mystic. Don't forget to stop and grab a bite at Mystic Pizza - made famous by the movie of the same name starring Julia Roberts.

These are a few of the many great, family-friendly day trips from New Haven that are an easy drive away. Gather up the kids, pack up the car, and head on out!
