Raising Cane’s, a national chicken finger chain, is looking to open its first Connecticut location in Enfield.

The chain has proposed a plan to open a restaurant at 90 Elm Street, near the Enfield Square Mall, local news site The Connecticut Scoop initially reported Oct. 18. Enfield's assistant town planner Matthew Davis confirmed the potential project Monday.

"A Planning and Zoning application has not yet been submitted, but we do expect it shortly," Davis said in an email. "Staff has had preliminary (pre-application) consultations with project principals and most if not all technical design matters have been addressed."

Julia Doyle, Raising Cane's director of public relations, said in an email Monday that the Enfield location is projected to open in late 2023, and more Connecticut restaurants are in the works.

"We have additional plans to open in Simsbury, as well as are looking at sites around the Hartford and New Haven areas," Doyle wrote.

Raising Cane’s currently has only one New England location, on Commonwealth Avenue in Boston. Another Boston restaurant is planned for Boylston Street, and Raising Cane's will also open in the central Massachusetts town of Marlborough in 2023.

The chicken chain, founded in Baton Rouge, La. in 1996, features a simple menu of fried chicken fingers, crinkle-cut French fries and Texas toast. Sides include cole slaw and its signature Cane’s sauce, with a “top secret recipe” that only a few people know, Cane’s notes on its website.

The chicken fingers are marinated for 24 hours, hand-battered and cooked to order, Raising Cane’s website says. Meals are available as combos featuring three, four or six fingers with sides and drinks, and the chicken can be ordered as a sandwich, with three fingers on a toasted bun with lettuce and tomato.

Raising Cane’s opened its 600th restaurant in January, and plans considerable growth in the next year, the company announced in an August posting.

“This year we’ve already opened 50 new Raising Cane’s restaurants, and we’re aiming to raise that to 100 by the end of 2022 in places like Philadelphia, Phoenix, Florida, Michigan, Virginia, and more,” the post read.

“We’re planning to keep this party going right into 2023, with more than 100 additional locations opening in the next year, everywhere from Albuquerque to New York and Baltimore…Keep your eyes peeled for exciting new landmark locations in Miami Beach, Nashville, and New York City set to open in late 2022 and 2023.”
