Sean Patrick Bowley's Audibles! Your guide to Week 5's high school football games

Sean Patrick Bowley

Welcome back to another edition of AUDIBLES!

As seen on last week's postgame comments from Hamden's Tom Dyer! Now with 50% more snark!

Yes, you've come to the right place for bulletin board material.

That is unless you're from the SCC, FCIAC and SWC. After a busy first four weeks of the 2022 season, teams across the state take well-deserved breaks before diving into the season's stretch run.  You are free to enjoy this week SPB free.

The CCC, Pequot, CTC and NVL are on, however, and there are plenty of big games to whet your appetite for high school football — especially in the NVL and Pequot.

So let's not dilly dally. Here's what's what for Week 5:

SPB's Audibles: Week 5

Thursday, Oct. 8

  • FARMINGTON (2-2) at BLOOMFIELD (2-2), 7 p.m. -- If you thought RHAM's Nylen was tough, Farmington, try a an angry and jilted Bloomfield squad.

  • WOLCOTT (1-3) at ANSONIA (4-0), 6 p.m. -- We're quite sure Ansonia had a productive — if not grueling — week of practice.
  • NAUGATUCK (4-0) at HOLY CROSS (4-0), 6:30 p.m. -- Lost in the hullabaloo of the RBs might be Naugy's (very underrated) defense.
  • WOODLAND (3-1) at TORRINGTON (1-3), 7 p.m. -- Torrington has scored as many points as Woodland has allowed this year (48).

Friday, Oct. 7

  • CONARD (2-2) at SIMSBURY (1-3), 6:30 p.m. -- Conard is unbeaten vs. CCC teams this year.
  • MALONEY (4-0) at NEWINGTON (0-4), 6:30 p.m. -- Just when you thought CCC Tier I couldn't wreak more havoc on Newington, well...
  • SOUTHINGTON (4-0) at EAST HARTFORD (0-4), 6:30 p.m. -- Hornets showed up against Conard last week. Unfortunately, this isn't Conard.
  • GLASTONBURY (4-0) at HALL (0-4), 7 p.m. -- This time last year, these records were reversed.
  • NEW BRITAIN (1-3) at SOUTH WINDSOR (1-3), 3:30 p.m. -- South Windsor has at least been more consistent on offense.
  • WINDSOR (2-2) at BRISTOL CENTRAL (1-3), 6 p.m. — Win here will set Windsor up nicely for a Southington showdown after next week's bye.
  • ENFIELD (1-2) at WETHERSFIELD (3-1), 7 p.m. — Enfield got a needed confidence boost from its wipeout of Bristol Central heading into this toughie.
  • RHAM (3-1) at PLAINVILLE (0-4), 6:30 p.m. -- That blip on the edge of your radar is Max Nylen and RHAM creeping up the Class M standings.
  • BRISTOL EASTERN (0-4) at BERLIN (4-0), 7 p.m. -- The path to the playoffs now ridiculously wide open for Berlin. How wide? Think Moses v. the Red Sea.
  • NORTHWEST CATHOLIC (1-3) at E.O. SMITH (2-2), 6 p.m. -- Both teams think they have a good shot to win here. And they just both might.
  • AVON (2-2) at PLATT (2-2), 6:30 p.m. -- Platt's Avery Robinson threw five TDs last week. You'll need to stop him, Avon.
  • MANCHESTER (2-2) at MIDDLETOWN (2-2), 6:30 p.m. -- Both teams have shown promise, but still a long way to go yet.

  • THAMES RIVER (2-0) at VG TECHS (0-3), 6 p.m. -- Have a seat. It'll be a while before Thames River sees a worthy adversary.
  • WILCOX/KAYNOR (2-2) at CHENEY TECH (3-1),  6 p.m. -- The road to redemption starts here for Cheney Tech. Still plenty of biggies left.

  • OXFORD (2-2) at GILBERT/NORTHWESTERN/HOUSATONIC (2-2), 6 p.m. -- Look, GNH seriously needs to consider 'Berkshire All-Stars' as its co-op's official name.
  • CROSBY (3-1) at WCA (3-1), 7 p.m. -- There aren't many better or more intriguing Week 5 matchups than this one. Yes.
  • WATERTOWN (1-3) at SEYMOUR (2-2), 7 p.m. -- Seymour's schedule a lot like Woodland's, now. Cats get a month to work things out.

  • CAPITAL PREP/AF (3-1) at ELLINGTON (3-1), 6:30 p.m. -- It's crossover week in the Pequot. Both of these teams have massive games on the horizon making this one pretty big, too.
  • CROMWELL/PORTLAND (4-0) at GRANBY/CANTON (3-1), 6:30 p.m. -- Granby/Canton's come all the way back from its opening loss. Here's their midseason exam.
  • ROCKVILLE (2-1) at MORGAN (1-3), 6:30 p.m. -- Rockville's only allowed 13 points in three games. Morgan has allowed 147 total in four.
  • SMSA (4-0) at NORTH BRANFORD (2-2), 6:30 p.m. -- Who among the T-Birds will match (or stop) SMSA's Danny Hernandez?
  • STAFFORD/SOMERS/EAST WINDSOR (2-2) at COGINCHAUG CO-OP (1-3), 6:30 p.m. -- Do yourself a favor, Stafford, resist the urge to even peek at your upcoming schedule.

  • SHEEHAN (2-2) at HILLHOUSE (0-4), 6 p.m. -- Sheehan is averaging 33 points per game. Hillhouse hasn't cracked 30 yet.
  • EAST HAVEN (2-2) at FORAN (4-0), 7 p.m. -- How seriously should we be taking unbeaten Foran? Check back in with us next week.

  • STONINGTON (1-3) at ROCKY HILL (2-2), 7 p.m. -- Remember, fellas, this counts for League prestige on the official Alliance (TM) scoreboard.

Saturday, Oct. 6

  • BULLARD/KOLBE (1-2) at ATI (2-1), 1 p.m. -- Wolverines have some catching up to do in the CTC race. This is only its second league game.
  • QUINEBAUG VALLEY (4-0) at PLATT TECH (1-2), 3:30 p.m. -- Here the Pride start a big three-game road trip with Cheney Tech waiting at the end.

  • DERBY (0-4) at WILBY (1-3), 11 a.m. -- Derby's schedule at last calms down, but first W might remain elusive.
  • KENNEDY (0-4) at ST.PAUL (1-3), 1 p.m. -- St. Paul has struggled this year, sure, but shouldn't here.

  • OSW (0-4) at CREC (1-3), 11 a.m. -- Don't expect much defense here...That is, unless there isn't much offense.
  • COVENTRY CO-OP (1-3) at VALLEY REGIONAL/OLD LYME (4-0), 1 p.m. -- Patience. We'll get to see plenty of VROL over the next three weeks.
  • H-K (1-2) at WINDSOR LOCKS CO-OP (0-3), 1 p.m. -- Grab these opportunities when you're able, fellas.

  • WILTON (4-0) at TOLLAND (2-2), 1 p.m. -- Whatever happens here, the foliage alone will be worth the trip.

Sunday, Oct. 7

  • NORTHWEST UNITED (3-0) at O'BRIEN (1-3), 10:30 a.m. -- On second thought, maybe NWU is the real 'Berkshire All-Stars'.
