Popular Connecticut grinder shop Nardelli’s, with 15 locations across the state, has announced plans for a store in Norwalk, with further expansion slated for lower Fairfield and Westchester counties.

The new Nardelli’s will open this fall at 345 Main Ave., and franchise owner Matthew Youngs will open four additional locations over the next six years. The expansion establishes a “substantial statewide presence and continues to push the business towards a national growth strategy,” according to a press release.

The family-owned brand first opened in Waterbury in 1922, led by brothers Giuseppe, Antonio and Frederico Nardelli, who had left their Italian hometown eight years earlier. Today, the Nardelli’s restaurants offer more than 30 hot and cold grinders, with favorites and best-sellers including an Italian combo, prosciutto hot pepper chicken, chicken cutlet, roasted turkey club and chipotle grilled chicken.

Other menu items include wraps, soups, salads, desserts and “hot servings” like mozzarella en carrozza, stuffed breads and macaroni and cheese. Nardelli’s also handles catering orders, including platters and party-sized grinders.

The restaurants also offer plant-based options, and introduced meat-free carpaccio and prosciutto artisanal deli slices imported from Italy last year. A vegan version of the Italian combo features these in a wrap, with vegan cheese and mayonnaise.

Nardelli’s has locations in Cromwell, Danbury, East Hartford, Farmington, Meriden, Middletown, Milford, Naugatuck, Orange, Southbury, Southington, Torrington, Wallingford and two in Waterbury. Information:
