An employee at a drive-in theater in Hockley fatally shot a man early Monday who tried to rob her, authorities said.

Showboat Drive-In was closed when the woman and another employee were upstairs and heard something downstairs about 2 a.m. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a statement for Metro Video.

They went downstairs to find a man, who may have been hiding in a closet, armed with a knife.

The employees ordered the man out of the closet and he dropped the knife and fled. Then, another man appeared from somewhere else in the business, located at 22422 FM 2920. Gonzalez said the second man was possibly armed with a bat.

After a possible altercation in which one of the employees may have been struck with the bat, the armed female employee shot and killed the man, the sheriff said.

Gonzalez said the investigation is still developing. He believes the man was in his early 20s.

"These folks are just trying to run a business out here," he said of the employees. "It's pretty isolated out here, so they did what they needed to do to protect themselves."
