SHELTON - The city has officially designated next week to honor the U.S. Constitution.

Mayor Mark Lauretti has proclaimed Sept. 17 to 23 as Constitution Week. Lauretti presented the proclamation to Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman (SRH-MS) Chapter Regent Patricia King last week.

King noted that Sept. 17 marks the 234th anniversary of the framing of the Constitution which is “the guardian of our liberties. The U.S. Constitution is the oldest constitution still in active use in the world today and is the basic document of our republic, which protects the individual liberties of all citizens through written law.”

Lauretti said he is a “strong advocate of the Constitution” and asks residents to “reaffirm the ideals the Framers of the Constitution held in 1787 by vigilantly protecting the freedoms guaranteed to us through this guardian of our liberties - remembering that lost rights may never be regained.”

King thanked Lauretti on behalf of the members of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

“The DAR wishes to encourage every generation of Americans to celebrate the spirit of the men and women who achieved our nation's independence,” King said.

King added that Shelton has many Revolutionary War patriots who defended the state from the British and agreed with Lauretti that “our citizens today need to protect our Constitution.”

The DAR is a women’s service organization dedicated to historic preservation, education and patriotism. Any woman older than 18 who can prove lineal descent to an ancestor who served in the American Revolution is a prospective member. For more information, visit http://sarahriggshumphreysdar.org/.
