DETOURS: Steel work planned for bridge off Route 8

The Route 34 bridge over the Naugatuck River in Derby will be closed at night for construction work beginning Tuesday, May 12. Nighttime closures will continue through at least the end of this work week.

New steel beams required for the rehabilitation and widening of the bridge will be installed during the closures.

The overnight closures will occur from 10 p.m.-6 a.m., according to the  Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT).

The closures originally were to start last Sunday, but have been delayed due to steel delivery issues, said a DOT representative.

Detour to be set up

Traffic will be detoured onto Route 8, Pershing Drive, Division Street in Ansonia to cross the Naugatuck River, and Route 115 (Derby Avenue).

Detour signs will be posted, and Derby and Ansonia police officers will assist with traffic control. One lane for emergency vehicles and pedestrians only will be provided during the closures.

There has been construction activity on the bridge for an extended period. Route 34 is Main Street in Derby at this location. The bridge is located just east of Exit 15 on Route 8 (it’s where Whiskey’s Bar, and the former Tailgators Bar & Grill, is located).

The bridge work, DOT Project No. 0036-0182, was awarded to Baier Construction Co. of Bloomfield at a cost of $8.86 million. It is scheduled to be completed in November 2016.
