DeLauro: Obama should explain reasons for possible Syria attack

Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro, whose district includes part of Shelton, is calling on President Barack Obama to continue consulting with Congress and to provide further explanation to the public about possible military action in Syria.

“President Obama’s assurance that there are no plans for boots on the ground or an open ended commitment to Syria is welcome, yet the administration needs to continue to consult with Congress on its planned response to the alleged use of chemical weapons by the [Syrian leader] Assad regime,” DeLauro said.

“And should the president chose to use force,” she continued, “he also must further explain to the American public the U.S. national security interest of such a response and how such action fits into a broader strategy to address the conflict in that country.”

Obama has since announced he will seek the backing of Congress for a possible attach on Syria.

DeLauro, a 12th term Democrat, said that the use of chemical weapons by a government cannot be tolerated.

“The use of chemical weapons against innocent civilians violates established global norms and its reported use by the Syrian government should not be tolerated by the international community,” she said.

Shelton has two members of Congress

The city of Shelton is divided between the Third District, represented by DeLauro, and the Fourth District, represented by fellow Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Himes.

DeLauro lives in New Haven and was first elected to Congress in 1990.
