Mayor Mark Lauretti opposes extending Center Street all the way to Canal Street once the Chromium Process Co. plant is demolished, he told zoning officials.

Lauretti said this could lead to public safety concerns by state transportation officials due to a new road’s proximity to the existing railroad tracks.

He said a municipal parking lot built on the Chromium Process land could include a formal sidewalk crossing, eliminating the need for a costly pedestrian bridge over the railroad tracks closer to Bridge Street.

The parking lot’s design and landscaping, Lauretti said, could be used to prevent it from being used as a quick short-cut from West Canal Street to Canal Street.

Center Street now ends at West Canal Street, in front of the vacant Chromium Process factory and behind the Dunkin’ Donuts.
