Malloy to meet with Obama at the White House on Tuesday
Gov. Dannel P. Malloy will attend a meeting at the White House with President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden on Tuesday afternoon.
The event, called the “Third Annual Executive Committee Meeting,” was organized by the nonpartisan National Governors Association (NGA) and will be attended by each governor who serves on the NGA’s Executive Committee.
Malloy is one of nine governors on the NGA Executive Committee. The Democrat was re-elected to a second term as governor last November.
He is scheduled to depart for Washington, D.C. on Tuesday morning and return in the early evening. He will be sworn into his second term in office on Wednesday in Hartford.
In 2016, Malloy will serve as chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, a partisan organization that raises money to support Democratic candidates running for governor. The Republicans have a similar organization.
Inauguration is Wednesday
The state’s gubernatorial inauguration ceremony will take place Wednesday, Jan. 7 at 1:30 p.m. at the William A. O’Neill State Armory, 360 Broad St., Hartford (near the state Capitol).
The ceremony is free and open to the public. Tickets are not necessary and seats are first come, first served. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m.
Guests are asked to arrive early and to refrain from bringing large bags in order to ensure smooth admittance through security protocols.
In addition to Malloy, the state’s constitutional officers — Attorney General George Jepsen, Comptroller Kevin Lembo, Treasurer Denise L. Nappier, and Secretary of the State Denise Merrill — also will be sworn into office during the ceremony.
Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman, who presides over the state Senate as part of her official duties, will take the oath of office at a separate ceremony earlier that morning in the Senate chamber during the General Assembly’s opening day activities, as is tradition.
Parade precedes the ceremony
The inauguration ceremony will be preceded by a parade, beginning that morning at Jewell and Trinity streets in downtown Hartford. The parade route essentially goes around Bushnell Park.
Guests attending the inauguration ceremony should plan for road closures in the areas surrounding the State Capitol and the State Armory during the parade.
