SHELTON — Market Place will soon be spicing up the restaurant scene along Bridgeport Avenue.

Co-owner Eli Hawli, in an appearance before the Planning and Zoning Commission on Tuesday, said he hopes Market Place will be opening in vacant space at 811 Bridgeport Ave., former home of Ruby Tuesday, by August.

Market Place, known for its American tavern cuisine, has locations in Avon, Danbury, Brookfield, Woodbury, Litchfield and Newtown.

Hawli, who said the interior of the present building will be completely renovated, needed commission approval to create two outdoor patio areas. The commission unanimously approved the proposal.

Market Place’s website takes people to each of the restaurants and shows off menus with starters such as an ahi tuna avocado sushi roll, hickory smoked chicken wings, calamari, crispy Brussels sprouts with cheese and pumpkin seeds and swordfish kabobs, soups and a variety of inventive salads.

Dinner entrees can include squash raviolo, rigatoni Bolognese, grilled salmon and four-hour braised beef short ribs, while “handheld” entrees include burgers, fish tacos and paninis.

The variety of choices appear to vary from site to site and season to season.

The Bridgeport Avenue Ruby Tuesday location closed in June. It was one of three such restaurants closed at that time after the chain began shutting down stores at the beginning of 2020.
