The 10-pump station in the Shelton Square Shopping Center, next to the supermarket, is expected to open before the end of the month.

A new guardrail and curbing recently were added on Bridgeport Avenue where the shopping center driveway entrance closest to the gas station is located. That followed the completion of some drainage-related work on the small brook in that vicinity.

Among the tasks that still remain to be done are to put down the final layer of asphalt for the gas station driveway area, to paint directional lines on the driveway, and to do additional landscaping.

The gas station is between the supermarket and Burger King.

Cold weather, demolition were issues

Stop & Shop officials had hoped to open new facility during the winter, but demolition challenges delayed progress and then cold weather halted construction work until the arrival of spring.

A former office building — which once housed a bank and the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce offices — had to be knocked down to make way for the gas station on a 1.3-acre parcel at 900 Bridgeport Ave.

The Stop & Shop fueling station was approved in early 2013 by the Shelton Planning and Zoning Commission. It will have five two-sided pump islands, with a kiosk for the attendant, all under a canopy.

Once completed, cars entering from Bridgeport Avenue — near the Burger King— will drive 200 feet before reaching the gas station entrance.
