New restaurant space proposed at Shelton shopping complex
The owner of the Bridgeport Avenue shopping complex with the Sears Hardware and FedEx Office store wants to add a new building for a sit-down restaurant.
The proposed 2,418-square-foot building would be in the northeast corner of the parking lot in front of Sears Hardware, near the Hampton Inn property and Bridgeport Avenue.
Connecticut Commercial Investors LLC, the property owner, is seeking to modify the Planned Development District that was created to allow for the original development.
A public hearing on the application has been set for Jan. 28 by the Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z).
In 2013, the P&Z had given permission for a slightly larger building at the same location with the condition that no food service establishment could be a tenant.
That’s because P&Z members at the time were worried about losing parking spaces in the lot that serves the existing businesses, and food-serving outlets need more parking than most other uses.
The new proposal would lead to a loss of 15 parking spaces in the parking lot, according to the plan. The one-story building would be built where existing parking spaces are located.
The applicant has proposed having a small outdoor patio area and adding some high scrubs to screen the new building from the abutting hotel property.
