Official is named treasurer of national organization
Connecticut Secretary of the State Denise Merrill has been elected treasurer of the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS), a position that places her in line to be named NASS president in 2016.
Merrill was named to the national leadership position of treasurer during the organization’s annual summer conference in Baltimore.
Leadership of NASS — a bipartisan organization among all 50 secretaries of state in the United States — alternates annually between Democratic and Republican members.
“I look forward to working with all my colleagues across the country to help give more citizens a voice in government and streamline and improve the way government works with business,” Merrill said.
Merrill was first elected secretary of the state in 2012. She previously was a state representative from Mansfield.
A national organization
The new NASS president is Kate Brown of Oregon, and the president-elect is Tom Schedler of Louisiana. Merrill’s position is the third highest in the organization.
NASS serves as a medium for the exchange of information between states and fosters cooperation in the development of public policy.
The association focuses on elections and voting, state business services and digital archiving, international relations and state securities regulation.
