PHOTOS: Four vehicles collide on Route 8 north in Shelton
A four-vehicle accident occurred on Route 8 northbound in Shelton at slightly past 5 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 22, according to the State Police.
The incident occurred between Exit 12 (Old Stratford Road) and Exit 13 (Constitution Boulevard South). Echo Hose Fire crews responded to the scene.
The highway was congested at the time, being rush hour and a usual “choke point” for northbound drivers on Route 8 at that time of the day.
According to the State Police report, it was a chain reaction accident, where one vehicle hit the rear of the car in front of it, causing four vehicles to eventually collide.
Airbag in one vehicle deployed
The operator and passengers in one vehicle were transported to the hospital for what were described as minor injuries. That driver and his two passengers were from Trumbull. The airbag in that vehicle — a 2014 Audi A5 — deployed during the accident, according to the State Police report.
The other drivers involved were from Beacon Falls, Naugatuck and New Britain. Aigbags didn’t deploy in the other vehicles.
Three of the vehicles had to be towed from the scene due to damage. The damage appeared to be major to some of the cars involved, based on photos taken at the scene.
The driver from New Britain — who was driving a 1995 Toyota Camry — was “found to be at fault for the collision,” the State Police said, and was issued a citation for failure to maintain a safe distance.
Second accident nearby
Slightly north of the four-vehicle crash, a single-car accident occurred about two hours later on Route 8 northbound, at around 7 p.m.
A vehicle hit a utility pole that fell on the road, near the Exit 13 (Constitution Boulevard South) exit ramp. The highway was shut down for a period so the utility pole could be removed.
This led to some traffic backups on local roads in Shelton, especially on Bridgeport Avenue, as motorists heading north attempted to get around the accident scene.
