R&B band kicks off Huntington Green concert series
The Bernadettes, a rhythm-and-blues band, will open the Huntington Green weekly concert series with a performance this Wednesday, June 24 from 7-9 p.m.
The Shelton Parks and Recreation Department’s 2015 Music Under the Stars concert series will continue through Aug. 26.
In case of inclement weather, people should call the Parks & Rec cancellation line at 203-331-4120 for a status update.
The Bernadettes have been one of the regulars at the Huntington Green in recent years. People are invited to bring lawn chairs, blankets and food, with food also available from food trucks and nearby stores.
From Motown to rock
The Bernadettes began in the early 1990s as a traditional-style blues band, covering songs by the likes of Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker and Stevie Ray Vaughn.
But the band soon began experimenting with their own unique versions of R&B classics from James Brown, Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding and their contemporaries.
This evolved further with the addition of classic Motown hits, contemporary funk, soul and R&B-flavored rock songs to their large and varied, dance-oriented song list. The resulting mix has become the staple of the band’s offering to live audiences.
The Bernadettes have been voted the Best Rhythm and Blues Band and the Number 1 Bar Band by readers of a New Haven publication.
