Route 34 to be closed for dam work, detour goes through Shelton

The road over the Stevenson Dam will be closed in both directions from May 2 to 5 to perform maintenance work on the dam.

The detour will bring vehicles into downtown Shelton using Route 110, crossing over the river on the Derby/Shelton Bridge.

The closure should begin at 6 a.m. on Saturday, May 2 and continue until midnight on Tuesday, May 5, according to the dam’s owner, FirstLight Hydro Generating Company (FirstLight).

The dam is on Route 34 (Roosevelt Drive) on the Monroe/Oxford town line, carrying vehicles over the Housatonic River. The dam forms Lake Zoar to the north, and Lake Housatonic to the south (Lake Housatonic borders Shelton, including at Indian Well State Park).

In an effort to minimize the impact to the public, most of the work will be done throughout the weekend, according to First Light.

Detour route specifics

Traffic will be detoured using Route 111 (Monroe), Route 110 (Monroe and Shelton), and Bridge Street in downtown Shelton and Derby.

Long-distance traffic is advised to take Route 8 and Interstate 84 to avoid the Stevenson Dam area.

First Light said during the four-day detour, motorists should follow the posted detour signs and follow the directions of uniformed police officers working along the route.
