Shelton event to feature Model T, Model A cars on May 18

The third annual Old Car Meet (1931 vehicles and earlier) will take place Saturday, May 18 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Beardsley's Cider Mill parking lot, 278 Leavenworth Road (Route 110), Shelton.

On display will be Ford Model Ts, Ford Model As and other older cars from the early 19th century. There also will be old car parts vendors. The event is open to the public. Admission and parking are free, with food available for purchase.

Rain date is Sunday, May 26.

Growing up around old cars

Daniel Beardsley is organizing the event. He said he grew up surrounded by Model A’s and some Model T’s, as his father is an antique-car enthusiast.

As a youngster, he and his siblings would sell corn out of a ’31 pickup truck used for a farm stand, and on his 16th birthday his father gave him a ’28 Tudor he had worked on that he then drove to high school every day.

After focusing on establishing his own family as a young man, Beardsley said he has rediscovered his love for the old cars now that he is in his 40s.

He joined two local Model A clubs, built a barn to work on old vehicles, and began attending antique car swap meets and shows — only to find most of them featured "modern cars" from the 1940s to ’80s.

'A big hit'

After a friend suggested having an event for only older cars such as Model T’s and Model A’s, the first Old Car Meet took place at Beardsley’s Cider Mill in 2011. “It was a big hit with owners as well as spectators,” Beardsley said.

The Old Car Meet will feature only vehicles from 1931 or earlier, such as Ford Model A’s (1903-04), Model T’s (1908-27), and new Model A’s (1927-31). He is hoping to get more antique car owners and related vendors involved this year, as well as to attract more attendees.
