Shelton resident injured in National Guard vehicle accident that left one dead

A Shelton resident has been identified as the Connecticut Army National Guard member who was injured in the Thursday motor vehicle accident on Interstate 95 in New York state, not too far from the Connecticut border. The accident left another National Guard member from Connecticut dead.

According to reports, Sgt. 1st class Kayla Anne Downey, 31, of Shelton was taken to a hospital for treatment. Downey has served in Iraq during her military career, according to reports.

Another National Guard member, now being identified as Staff Sgt. Ronald Patterson Jr. of Bridgeport, was killed in the accident.

The two soldiers were taking used ammunition in a military truck to Fort Dix, N.J., when they collided with a civilian vehicle on I-95 near the border of Port Chester and Rye, N.Y.

They both are members of A Company, 192nd Engineer Battalion, based in Stratford, according to reports.
