SHELTON — The Spooner House annual frozen turkey and fixings drive for holiday meal baskets has begun and will continue through mid-December.

The goal for this holiday season is to prepare 500 meal baskets, according to Spooner House Executive Director Susan Agamy.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the lower Naugatuck Valley has needed to provide food service for more people and that includes helping them to obtain all the ingredients necessary for satisfying holiday meals.

Individuals, families, businesses, schools, church congregations and civic organizations are encouraged to collect items or complete baskets.

“Last year, we collected enough food to feed more than 400 families during the holiday,” Agamy added.

Smile Dental Center owner Dr. Bruce Sofferman and his family hold an annual food collection outside his office at 1000 Bridgeport Ave., this year’s on Wednesday. Sofferman’s Smile Dental Center will also be collecting frozen turkeys and fixings from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Nov. 19.

There will also be a food collection - sponsored by the Shelton High School basketball team and Shelton Biddy Basketball Clinic — Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to noon at Shelton Intermediate School.

In addition to the Smile Dental Center drop off, other locations and Holiday Food Drive events this year include Adams Hometown Markets in Shelton, Starbucks in Shelton, Super Stop & Shop in Ansonia and Shelton, Target in Ansonia, the Boy Scouts “Scouting for Food” drive, the Girl Scout Troop 64164 food collection at First United Methodist Church in Shelton, the Shelton High School basketball clinic at Shelton Intermediate School, as well as continuing the tradition of frozen turkey drives at the Seymour Middle School and the Chatfield-LoPresti Elementary School in Seymour.

Visit http://www.actspooner.org/for updates on specific collection events. Some locations will not be able to accept frozen turkeys, only non-perishable items.

Deliveries of non-perishable food items are always accepted at Spooner House at 30 Todd Road seven days a week. Checks should be made payable to Spooner House and mailed to 30 Todd Road, Shelton CT 06484. Secure donations may also be made via PayPal by clicking on the Donate button at the bottom of the ACT Spooner House home page.

Items suggested for each basket are shown below or a list of the most needed items may be found at actspoonerhouse.org.
