Shelton salon’s ‘Glam-a-Thon’ to raise money for children’s grief support

SHELTON — Getting a makeover has never felt so good.

Sona Bella Salon and Spa, located on Coram Avenue, is holding a Glam-a-Thon on March 27, with all proceeds going to the nonprofit Adam Wysota Foundation, which offers grief education and peer support, at no cost, in a home-like setting at Shelton-based Adam’s House.

“This is such a great resource right here in the community,” said Ashley Graham, Sona Bella Salon & Spa salon coordinator. “We think this will be great exposure for (Adam’s House). It’s an organization that helps so many families in their times of grief.”

Adam’s House is a healing place for families as they go through their eight-week grief journey. At the Coram Avenue home, children and their families gather to draw support from their peers and gain new strategies for dealing with their loss.

Openings remain for the Glam-a-Thon, according to Graham. The salon, a staple on Coram Avenue for 16 years, offers a wash and haircut, kids haircuts, mini manicures and mini shellac manis. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Graham said the salon is one of the participants in the Mama’s & Mimosas event — sponsored by Celebrate Shelton — planned at Adam’s House on May 7. But she said the salon wanted to do more, which led to holding the Glam-a-Thon.

“It means the world to us that organizations like Sona Bella Salon & Spa graciously jumped in to help fund our mission, that no child should ever grieve alone,” said Allison Wysota, Adam’s House founder and executive director.

“We are thankful to Celebrate Shelton for facilitating this partnership and cherish the long-standing relationship we have with (Celebrate Shelton founders) Nicole Heriot-Mikula, Michael Skrtic and Jimmy Tickey,” she said. “We look forward to a continuing partnership with our neighbors and supporters, Sona Bella Salon & Spa.”

Mamas & Mimosas is a one-day specialty shopping event with wellness workshops, beauty services, live music, mimosas and more.

“Celebrate Shelton seeks to provide low-to-no cost events that strengthen the ties within our community, bring together families, and promote cultural enrichment,” Heriot-Mikula said. “We pride ourselves on community partnerships; and this is a perfect example.”

Graham said the salon has 56 appointments booked for the Glam-a-Thon day, and estimates the services will raise about $1,084. Various raffles and other donations could add to that total.
