BRIDGEPORT — A Stratford man was being held on $1 million bond after police said he shot another man following an alleged argument about catalytic converters.

Eugene Delevante, 43, of Knowlton Street, was charged Tuesday with attempted murder, first-degree assault and criminal possession of a firearm.

During Delevante’s arraignment Tuesday afternoon, Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Nicholas Bove urged Superior Court Judge Maureen Dennis to set a high bond for the defendant citing the serious nature of the charges.

Delevante’s lawyer, Assistant Public Defender Hannah Snow, urged leniency for her client, arguing he is a lifelong resident of the state and has family in the area.

After setting the bond the judge continued the case to Dec. 6.

According to police, early Monday morning officers were called to Knowlton Street for a shooting. Police said they subsequently received information that a Bridgeport man had been taken to St. Vincent’s Medical Center with multiple gunshot wounds in the leg.

Police said witnesses told them a car had pulled up to Delevante’s home and the defendant, who had been sitting on the front porch of the home, began loudly arguing with the driver of the car.

Police said witnesses told them that Delevante had pointed a handgun at the driver’s side of the car and fired a half dozen gunshots at it. The car then drove off.

The victim, who was being treated at the hospital, told detectives that he had driven to the home of a man he knew as “Boulder” to have a discussion about catalytic converters, according to police. They said the victim told them the discussion became heated and “Boulder” pulled out a gun with a laser sight and began shooting at the victim.

Police said the victim identified Delevante’s home as the site of the shooting but would not identify a photograph of Delevante as the shooter.
