The New Haven Fire Department was dispatched to Water Street just before 10 a.m. for a reported fire at the magnet high school. Students were evacuating the building as firefighters arrived, Assistant Fire Chief Justin McCarthy said in an email.
Fire personnel found and extinguished a blaze in a second-floor bathroom, according to McCarthy.
"The area had significant smoke and crews are working to ventilate and ensure air quality is safe," McCarthy added.
Students were moved to the gymnasium due to the outside temperatures, McCarthy said. Justin Harmon, a spokesperson for New Haven Public Schools, said all are safe from the fire.
The fire department's Investigative Unit will investigate the cause of the blaze. McCarthy said the Board of Education is also at the scene to assist.
