Avalon Shelton complex downtown praised as ‘centerpiece of revitalization’

The Avalon apartment complex in downtown Shelton is being praised as a “centerpiece of downtown Shelton’s comprehensive revitalization strategy.”

The complex, known as Avalon Shelton, recently received a Silver Hammer Award from the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce.

The $60-million, 250-unit apartment building is on Canal Street along the Housatonic River. It opened in March 2013.

 Boost to downtown business

Since opening, Greater Valley Chamber President Bill Purcell said Avalon Shelton “has enjoyed remarkable success in drawing new residents into the Shelton community, which has had a positive impact on downtown Shelton’s retail and restaurant scene.”

The complex includes one- and two-bedroom apartments with gourmet kitchens as well as a modern fitness center, outdoor swimming pool and courtyards, and an interior structured parking garage that Purcell described as being “invisible from the street.”

Area being upgraded

Speaking at a chamber event, Purcell said the city and Shelton Economic Development Corp. have rebuilt and repaved a section of Canal Street near Avalon, adding sidewalks and granite curbing and putting utility lines underground.

Next, the Shelton Riverwalk will be extended in that area, going between the Avalon building and river. Purcell said this walking path would provide “both apartment residents and the general public with access to dramatic views of the Housatonic River.”

Recently, to recognize its economic impact on the surrounding community, the Connecticut Economic Resource Center presented a Celebrate Connecticut Award to Avalon Shelton.

Owned by AvalonBay Communities

Avalon Shelton is owned and operated by AvalonBay Communities, a real estate investment trust that develops and manages apartment communities across the United States. The company also has an upscale, 99-unit rental complex called Avalon Huntington on lower Bridgeport Avenue in Shelton.

Avalon Shelton was one of a few businesses recognized during the Greater Valley Chamber’s Holiday Breakfast Club and Awards Celebration, held in December at Molto Bene Italian American Kitchen in Ansonia.
