Brian and Howard Brainard are starting a new heating oil delivery business in Shelton.

The Brainard family is planning to open a new oil delivery business in the next few weeks. This follows the closing of the previous business that was under the stewardship of a new owner, who had purchased the longtime Shelton company and its name in 2009.

The new owner continued to operate the business as Brainard Fuel Oil, but apparently stopped making deliveries sometime in May.

Howard Brainard and his son Brian will run the newly formed company, to be called Brainard’s Heating Oil LLC.

“The legal paperwork is getting done now,” Howard Brainard said. “Hopefully we’ll be pumping in a few weeks.”

The new company will be owned and overseen exclusively by family members, he stressed.

Reaching out to customers

Howard and Brian Brainard were meeting potential customers with a booth at Shelton Day on Sunday. The new company will operate out of the former office at 137 Oak Ave.

Howard Brainard sent an Oct. 2 letter to his former customers explaining the situation, noting he had “sold [his] business name, goodwill, customer list and equipment” to the new owner but then the business closed “due to a series of unfortunate events.”

“Thank you for your patience during this transitional time and we will once again be delivering home heating oil in the next few weeks,” he told them in the letter.

The phone number for the new Brainard’s Heating Oil LLC is 203-343-1011.

Family business began in 1940

Howard Brainard also had operated another company, an HVAC and plumbing contractor called Brainard’s Inc. He sold that business to an entity in late 2011, and it also ceased operations in recent months.

Howard Brainard said he’s focusing on re-starting the fuel delivery business for now.

Brainard’s was founded in 1940 by Otis M. Brainard Jr., who was Howard’s grandfather. With Brian’s involvement, the company’s slogan will be updated to “Four Generations of Quality Service.” The old slogan had referred to “Three Generations.”
