‘Celebrate Shelton’ promotes ‘shopping small’ at local merchants

Residents will be able to “Celebrate Shelton” during the holiday season with promotions intended to highlight the city as a place to shop locally.

Events will include a vendor festival with handmade crafts and a Christmas tree-lighting, and a magazine focusing on local merchants.

Celebrate Shelton is a citywide initiative begun by two small business owners — Michael Skrtic, owner of the Glass Source Studio, and Nicole Heriot-Mikula, owner of bringtheHoopla.

Market with handmade artisan crafts

The Downtown Handmade Market, a five-date vendor festival, will be held at the Conti Building, 415 Howe Ave., in downtown Shelton. A Black Friday kick-off celebration for the market will take place Friday, Nov. 28 from 6-9 p.m., and be sponsored by Liquid Lunch and feature wine from Linda’s Liquors in Shelton.

The celebration event will include handmade artisan vendors, live music, hors d’oeuvres and a wine tasting. All vendors will have a special offer during the kick-off event. Tickets for the celebration are $5 at the door, with children 14 and younger admitted free.

The Downtown Handmade Market will continue with no admission charge on four subsequent Saturdays:

— Small Business Saturday, Nov. 29, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

— Dec. 6 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

— Dec. 13 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

— Dec. 20 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Tree-lighting with Santa on Dec. 6

The community tree-lighting will take place Saturday, Dec. 6 at 5:30 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park (the Riverwalk), 83 Canal St. East. Santa Claus is expected to appear at the event.

There will be hot cocoa, sweets supplied by the local Boys & Girls Club, and caroling by Center Stage Theatre. Children are encouraged to create their own handmade ornaments to hang on the tree with their families on the evening of the lighting.

The tree-lighting is sponsored by Webster Bank, Valley Community Foundation and Center Stage. Organizers are thanking Jones Family Farms and the city of Shelton for their assistance as well.
