New doughnut shop to open in Shelton
A new doughnut shop is coming to Shelton. The Wojnarowski family plans to open a doughnut shop at 781 River Road (Route 110), which is the new retail building being built across from the Sports Center of Connecticut.
The family now operates a similar shop, called Donut Inc., in Stratford at Paradise Green.
The Shelton Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) unanimously approved the Wojnarowski’s application for the business on Sept. 9. It’s the third business to be approved for the 5,800-square-foot retail complex still under construction — a Rita’s Italian Ice and a liquor store also plan to occupy space in the building.
Will include a drive-thru
The new doughnut shop will fill 1,500 square feet, operate a drive-thru window, have four to six employees, and be open daily from 6 a.m.-10 p.m. It will have a kitchen, limited seating and a counter area.
The establishment will sell doughnuts, coffee, egg sandwiches, bacon and similar fare, said Jason Wojnarowski, son of zoning applicant Arlene Wojnarowski. He said it does not intend to become a deli, burger joint or restaurant.
The family’s current doughnut shop in Stratford is much smaller and does not have a kitchen, so the shop's doughnuts now must be made off-premises.
Doughnuts to be made at store
The new Shelton location is big enough that they will be able to make their doughnuts on-site. Some doughnuts will be delivered from there to the Stratford shop, so a small delivery truck will be based at the Shelton location.
When questioned about any possible issues with odors in the surrounding area, Wojnarowski said there have been no such problems in Stratford. And he noted, “Doughnut smell is a nice smell.”
Wojnarowski said it’s uncertain whether the new location will have the same name as the existing shop, with a possibility it may be slightly different.
