A husband and wife have opened a restaurant featuring modern Asian cuisine in the Shelton Square shopping center, which includes Stop & Shop.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony recently took place at Red Lotus, owned by Larry Wang and his wife, Nia Chen. “We love this community,” Wang said. “We put a lot of hope, love and energy into this place.”

The couple previously owned a restaurant on Long Island, and opened Red Lotus about three weeks ago.

Red Lotus is at 872 Bridgeport Ave. in space previously occupied by Happy Family restaurant. The interior has been totally renovated and now has a modern look and includes a small bar. The interior was gutted and all the equipment was upgraded.

“It was an eight-month labor of love for the couple to renovate the restaurant,” according to publicity material.

‘Wonderful new addition’

Mayor Mark Lauretti and Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce President Bill Purcell joined the couple and other guests at the ribbon-cutting.

Purcell said Red Lotus is “a wonderful new addition to the restaurant scene” and an example of continued strong business activity in Shelton.

“Things are happening in this community,” Purcell said. “People are investing in this community.”

As a former restaurateur, Lauretti said he knows opening and operating an eating establishment is a challenge. “I wish you all the success,” Lauretti said.

See ‘possibilities’ in the site

Wang and Chen had been living in New York City but recently moved to Shelton. They picked Shelton to live and open a business in after seeing that the community was named the most affordable place to live in Connecticut in a Bloomberg News article.

They then noticed an ad from the previous restaurant owner, who was selling the business. They said they visited the site “and knew it had possibilities.”

“We found a community that wanted and needed a new Asian restaurant,” Wang and Chen said.

“Their greatest hope is that it will be another generational restaurant proudly serving the Shelton community for decades to come,” according to publicity material.

Red Lotus will be open Tuesday to Saturday from 11:30 a.m.-10 p.m., and Sunday from 1-9 p.m. Lunch is served six days a week from 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m.

The menu includes many classic and favorite dishes from Asia as well as a sushi bar. The chefs will cook to order. It has a full liquor license.
