Planet Fitness clubs help fight hunger with charitable promotion
Planet Fitness is participating in a charitable promotion that allows new members to "name their own price" to join, with 100% of the enrollment fees donated to Connecticut Food Bank or Foodshare.
The statewide initiative to end hunger runs from Nov. 3 to 13 at participating Planet Fitness locations. There are two Planet Fitness facilities in Shelton — at 760 Bridgeport Ave. and 784 River Road.
At Planet Fitness, new members now pay an enrollment fee and then $10 a month. As part of the "name your own price" campaign, Planet Fitness is offering an enrollment fee as low as $5, which will be donated to the two Connecticut food charities.
“As a result, members can join Planet Fitness and have access to a healthier lifestyle while making a difference to end hunger for their neighbors at the same time,” according to Planet Fitness promotional material.
In addition to the "name your own price" initiative, participating Planet Fitness locations also will collect non-perishable food items for the two nonprofit organizations.
Helping those who need it most
Dr. Charles Anderson, chief wellness officer for Planet Fitness in Connecticut, said the health club franchise is “thrilled to partner with Connecticut Food Bank and Foodshare to help provide nutritious food to those who need it most, especially during the holiday season when there is increasing demand for food assistance."
Connecticut Food Bank distributes food and other resources to more than 650 local emergency food programs throughout six counties in Connecticut, and Foodshare serves 300 community partners in two counties.
Nancy L. Carrington, Connecticut Food Bank president and CEO, said that “November is an ideal time to build awareness of the food insecurity faced by more than 520,000 people in Connecticut. However, hunger is an everyday problem in our state."
