Shelton-based BIC celebrates 40th anniversary of the pocket lighter

BIC, a manufacturer of stationery, lighter and shaver products that is headquartered in Shelton, is celebrating the 40th birthday of the BIC pocket lighter.

Every day around the world, consumers choose to buy more than six million BIC lighters  — and many of them are manufactured at the company’s Milford plant.

The company employs nearly 400 people in Connecticut, at its North American headquarters in Shelton, and lighter manufacturing and fuel cell research and development facilities in Milford. Many local organizations have benefited from the community involvement of the company and its employees.

BIC will mark the anniversary at an upcoming “Flicktacular” celebration, with Shelton Mayor Mark Lauretti expected to be among the local dignitaries present.

Lighter design contest winners

At the event, 11 national winners of the BIC “Best of You” lighter design contest will be announced. The winners, whose personal designs were submitted online, are expected to be in attendance.

They will be given the opportunity to see their design being applied to the BIC lighter live at the Milford lighter factory. The designs will be found in retail outlets across the nation later this year.

About BIC and the pocket lighter

BIC Consumer Products USA was founded more than 60 years ago, and has grown into one of the most recognized retail brands in the world today.

The BIC pocket lighter is America’s No. 1 lighter brand, according to the company’s publicity material. Every BIC lighter undergoes more than 50 separate, automatic quality checks during the manufacturing process, company officials said. The lighters meet or exceed the lighter safety standards established by ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and other industry and government agencies.
