Tom Steeves of Shelton-based Install Media Group will chair the Valley United Way’s 2013-14 annual Community Campaign.

Steeves, executive vice president and partner at Install Media Group, was named the Valley United Way Volunteer Center’s Volunteer of the Year in 2012.

He also is a graduate of Leadership Greater Valley, a local program that combines leadership skills building with community education.

Valley communities come together

Steeves said the Valley is a special place and that everyone can play a role in making the region a better place to live, work and play.

“Some say that the generations following the baby boomers are not as involved in their community or as charitable as those before them,” he said.

“I have learned first-hand that is not the case,” Steeves said, “and during the upcoming campaign I am hopeful that all of you will join me in proving once again that the annual Community Campaign is the one place where our Valley community joins together to meet the diverse needs of our community.”

Growing involvement

Jack Walsh, president and chief operating officer at Valley United Way, said Steeves has learned about the important role that United Way plays in the community through the many ways he has worked to better the region.

“Tom got involved with United Way through his own personal volunteer activity with the Corporate Volunteer Council and the more he learned about United Way, the greater his involvement became,” Walsh said.

Much involvement in the Valley

Steeves has been involved with many Valley initiatives. He has been a member of the United Way’s Corporate Volunteer Council and was the chairman of the Young Emerging Professionals committee at the Greater Valley Chamber from 2011 to 2012.

He has participated in the Griffin Golf Classic planning committee for the last two years and has been instrumental in helping with fund-raising efforts for many other initiatives in the Valley.

Walsh also noted that Steeves’ daughter, Alexia, had been a member of United Way’s Youth Leadership Program.

‘Make a difference’

The annual Community Campaign plays a pivotal role in supporting many needed services in the Valley. The theme of the upcoming 2013-14 campaign will be: “Look around. Get involved. Make a Difference.”

The campaign will officially kick-off in September, but Steeves now is planning for the fund-raising effort and assembling a campaign cabinet.

Valley United Way is a philanthropic resource for the Valley towns of Shelton, Ansonia, Derby, Oxford and Seymour. The organization funds programs and organizations serving youth, families and people in crisis.
