Stop & Shop and customers help the hungry
More than $2 million was donated to hunger relief organizations across the Northeast during the holiday season by Stop & Shop and its customers.
For every dollar donated to the organizations, three meals can be provided to those in need — for a total of more than 6 million meals.
Funds were given to local hunger relief agencies as well as local and regional food banks.
Stop & Shop operates a store on Bridgeport Avenue in Shelton.
Checkout donations, food boxes
Customers made donations at the grocery store chain’s locations through the Food for Friends program, contributing $1 to $5 at checkout registers; and by purchasing $10 holiday food trimmings boxes to be given to relief organizations.
In addition, Stop & Shop’s annual Turkey Express program donated more than 21,000 turkeys and 300 hams to 14 hunger relief organizations; and the company gave $42,000 to nonprofit organizations through its sponsorship affiliation with the New York Giants.
