Residents will be able to \u201cCelebrate Shelton\u201d during the holiday season with promotions intended to highlight the city as a place to shop locally. Events will include a vendor festival with handmade crafts and a Christmas tree-lighting, and a magazine focusing on local merchants. Celebrate Shelton is a citywide initiative begun by two small business owners \u2014 Michael Skrtic, owner of the Glass Source Studio, and Nicole Heriot-Mikula, owner of bringtheHoopla. The Downtown Handmade Market, a five-date vendor festival, will be held at the Conti Building, 415 Howe Ave. A Black Friday kick-off celebration will take place Friday, Nov. 28 from 6-9 p.m., and be sponsored by Liquid Lunch and feature wine from Linda\u2019s Liquors in Shelton. There will be handmade artisan vendors, live music, hors d\u2019oeuvres and a wine tasting. All vendors will have a special offer during the kick-off event. Tickets for the celebration are $5 at the door, with children 14 and younger admitted free. The Downtown Handmade Market will continue with no admission charge on four subsequent Saturdays \u2014 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Nov. 29, and from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Dec. 6, 13 and 20. Tree-lighting, and shopping guide The community tree-lighting will take place Saturday, Dec. 6 at 5:30 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park (the Riverwalk). Santa Claus is expected to appear. There will be hot cocoa, sweets supplied by the local Boys & Girls Club, and caroling by Center Stage Theatre. Children are encouraged to create their own handmade ornaments to hang on the tree at the lighting. The tree-lighting is sponsored by Webster Bank, Valley Community Foundation and Center Stage, with assistance from Jones Family Farms and the city of Shelton. The Small Business Crawl event guide is a 24-page glossy magazine that will include special offers from participating small businesses in Shelton in December.
