An orthodontist has opened a new office in Shelton that offers services for children and adults, ranging from traditional braces to surgical orthodontics. Dr. Maria Karayiannis, DMD, opened My Smile Orthodontics at 865 River Road (Route 110) in early February. \u201cWe just love this area,\u201d Karayiannis said. \u201cThere are lots of families, and it\u2019s so close to everything.\u201d The location is near the Merritt Parkway\u2019s Exit 53 and the Stratford border. Karayiannis is originally from Montreal, and previously practiced in Long Island, N.Y., where she had attended SUNY Stony Brook to earn a certificate in advanced education in general dentistry and postgraduate degree in orthodontics. She also has a doctorate in dental medicine (DMD) and a bachelor\u2019s degree in physiology, both from McGill University. Being state-of-the-art Karayiannis said it\u2019s important to keep up with all the advances in treatments and technology in orthodontics. Her practice offers state-of-the-art services with digital radiographs, a digital intra-oral 3D scanner that eliminates gooey impressions, and Invisalign. \u201cWe use the latest digital technology, offering a variety of safe and gentle treatment options, providing you with customized and individual care,\u201d she said. Karayiannis said she likes meeting new clients as she builds up the business. \u201cPeople here are great. They are very friendly,\u201d she said. She enjoys the challenges and opportunities that come with operating her own practice, with the help of an assistant. Her office provides \u201ca friendly, caring and patient-friendly environment,\u201d she said. Member of professional organizations Karayiannis is a member of the American Dental Association, American Association of Orthodontics, Northeast Society of Orthodontists, and Connecticut State Dental Association. She lives in Trumbull with her husband, Peter, who is an attorney. They have two children with a third child on the way. Peter grew up in Stamford. Karayiannis is fluent in French and Greek as well as English.
