The electronic gas price sign has been installed at the new Stop & Shop gas facility on Bridgeport Avenue — and, no, gas won’t cost $8.88 a gallon. They were just testing the sign, on Friday. The price sign is one of the last steps before the 10-pump station can open just south of the supermarket in the Shelton Square Shopping Center. (May 9 photos by Brad Durrell) Work crews still need to finalize some drainage-related work on a nearby brook, pour asphalt to create a driveway around the pumps (the surface area next to the pumps is concrete), and do landscaping work. It appears the station is likely to open in about two weeks, depending on how weather impacts construction activity. Stop & Shop officials had been hoped the new facility would open early last winter, but demolition challenges delayed progress and then the cold weather halted construction work until the arrival of spring weather. A former office building — which once housed a bank and the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce offices — had to be knocked down to make way for the gas station on a 1.3-acre parcel at 900 Bridgeport Ave. The Stop & Shop fueling station was approved in early 2013 by the Shelton Planning and Zoning Commission. It will have five two-sided pump islands, with a kiosk for the attendant, all under a canopy.
