Boy Scout Troop 28 recognized the Shelton Dog Park as the 24th piece of the official Shelton Christmas ornament collection.

The ornament depicts "Sheltie," the dog park's statue, inside a dog bone. The ornament was designed by Allan Buttrick.

Mayor Mark Lauretti, city Parks and Recreation Director Ron Herrick, “Sheltie” statue woodcarver Tim Bonney, and Friends of the Dog Park representatives were present as Troop 28 senior patrol leader David Keith and assistant senior patrol leader Gabe Aponte displayed the proclamation from the mayor formally announcing the ornament.

The scouts then presented the ornament to Lauretti, Bonney, and four Friends of the Dog Park officials — Margaret DeMaine, Carol and David Pendagast, and Lynn Todd Reid.

How to buy an ornament

Troop 28 members will be selling the ornaments during the Christmas season as a fund-raiser to support troop activities throughout the year.

Ornaments can be purchased from any Troop 28 scout, and at:

— Huntington Rental Center, 194 Leavenworth Road (Route 110)

— Center Stage Theatre, 54 Grove St. (inside the former Lafayette School)

Each year, the troop sells an ornament casted by Woodbury Pewter with an important Shelton landmark as its theme.

Dog park is gathering place

The dog park, opened in 2010, provides a safe, friendly place for dogs and their owners to meet and exercise.

One of the new ornaments now is on display at the park. Bonney carved the statue located on the corner of the dog park property, at Shelton Avenue and Nells Rock Road.
