COMMENTARY: Be vigilant when driving city roads this summer

I know we are all very pleased to see and to feel the warmer weather. More than one of my friends has commented after last winter’s chilling winds, "I will never complain about it being too hot ever again.”

That having been said, in less than one week from this being published, schools will be out for the summer. Take a deep breath and start to drive even more carefully than you did when the roads were a sheet of ice.

Children, teens and young adults will be out walking, biking, skateboarding, and talking with friends all over the city byways.

They will be pre-occupied with listening to their iPhones, texting, and just generally not watching the traffic or paying attention to what is going on around them.

We, the driving public, have to step up our game and be aware of all of this and take the appropriate measures to avoid any incidents.

Please be vigilant as you drive from Point A to Point B this summer, make the speed limit your goal, and keep an eye out for our youngest citizens who will be moving fast with little if any stopping power.

Outdoor family activities

Besides the warm weather, one of the other bright sides of summer, especially in Shelton, is evening family entertainment programs that are free to the public.

The Huntington Green weekly summer concert series will begin Wednesday, June 24.

The Shelton music and fireworks spectacular for Independence Day will take place Thursday, July 2 beginning at 6 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park on Canal Street, with a rain date set for Sunday, July 5.

The following weekend, from Thursday, July 9 through Sunday, July 12, the Valley Shakespeare Festival will perform A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The park is open for picnicking at 6 p.m., and the show begins at 8.

You can go to the city website,, for more information on many of the summer events.  Enjoy the summer festivals and watch out for our children on the roads.
