Twenty-nine Shelton residents will perform in the Youth CONNection Players’ play opening this weekend, while nine residents are plating behind-the-scene roles in the production.

The Drowsy Chaperone, winner of five Tony Awards and seven Drama Desk Awards, will be performed five times from July 26 to Aug. 3 in the Shelton High School auditorium. This weekend’s show are at 8 p.m. on Friday, July 26 and Saturday, July 27.

The play, which debuted on Broadway in 2006, has been described as “a ridiculously entertaining and insanely hilarious musical.”

"Man in Chair" role in play

In the play, to chase his blues away, a modern-day musical theater addict known simply as “Man in Chair” drops the needle on his favorite LP, the 1928 musical comedy “The Drowsy Chaperone.”

When the record begins to play, the musical magically bursts to life in his apartment, telling the tale of a pampered Broadway starlet who wants to give up show business to get married, her producer who sets out to sabotage the wedding, her chaperone, the debonair groom, her Latin lover and a pair of bumbling gangsters.

Other performances are at 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 2 and Saturday, Aug. 3; plus a 2 p.m. matinee on Aug. 3.
