Courtney Dishian, a Fifth Grade Teacher at Perry Hill Elementary School in Shelton, was recently awarded the 2016 Weller Excellence in Teaching Award in recognition of her project entitled, “Out of the World Alien Project”.
The goal of her project was “for students to research a planet of their choosing and construct a 3D model of an alien that could live on their planet based on the planet's features. Students presented their findings as a passport which allowed their alien to travel to Earth and visit their classroom. Aliens were created out of recycled materials, the passport detailed their alien’s features connecting it to real facts that were researched, and also contained additional information about the planet. Students presented their information by visiting the international space commissioner, Ms. Dishian, and showing their passport.”
