Events at the senior center include a BBQ, party and more
August birthday party — Held Friday, Aug. 23, at 1 p.m. Cost: $4. Music by Vinnie Carr. Tickets on sale at the Reception Desk until the Wednesday at noon before the party. Let staff know if you’re celebrating a birthday or anniversary.
Elder law — Tuesday, Aug. 27, 10 a.m., informational session about general estate planning. Non-members welcome.
End of Summer BBQ — Friday, Sept. 13, noon to 3 p.m. Tickets on sale Friday, Aug. 23 until the Wednesday at noon before the party.
Hearing maintenance — Precision Hearing Specialists provide members with free hearing maintenance at the center the fourth Tuesday of each month, from 10:30 to noon. This month’s screening is Aug. 27. Appointments are necessary, call 203-381-9555 to schedule. Non-members welcome.
Band jam — Music and dancing Tuesdays at 1 p.m.
Blood pressure screening — The Emergency Care Institute of Bridgeport Hospital will conduct blood pressure screenings at the senior center on the fourth Monday of each month from noon to 2 p.m. This month’s screening is Monday, Aug. 26. Non-members welcome.
Book club — Summer read is The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton. Members only.
Caregiver sessions — Next is Thursday, Sept. 19 at Griffin Hospital. Reserve a spot up to the Tuesday before, buy calling the center. Meal served at session.
Shelton Songsters — Group plans a fall concert for Oct. 23. The concert will be “Around the World in 60 Minutes.” Those interested in joining should call Betty or Ron Goddard at 203-929-4371. Members only to take part in the singing group.
For beginners — Begins Monday, Sept. 9; register at the reception desk. Cost: $10. Learn basics such as mouse usage, word processor, the scanner, email, spreadsheets, the Internet and file management. Runs eight weeks, 9:30-2 p.m. Limited to eight participants. Members only.
Basic Microsoft Excel Spreadsheets — Introduction to Microsoft Excel, using the 2003 version. It is focused on Windows-based PCs and is not compatible with Apple computers. Lessons will cover the building of a household budget and applying pie charts, as well as tracking an investment record and its graphical representation, keeping a stock record in table and in pie charts and creating and using a database for mailing labels, etc. Course length is four days, 9:30-2 p.m. Begins Wednesday, Sept. 11. Cost: $5. Members only.
Camera and computer imaging — Begins Thursday, Sept. 12. Class begins at 9:30 a.m. and run eight weeks. Cost: $10. Learn how to set your camera to get the best pictures and make them better by editing them in your computer. Printing in different sizes and saving them for the future and more. Members only.
Games — Wii bowling, Thursdays at 2 p.m. Bingo, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 1 p.m. in the Bingo Room. Scrabble, Wednesdays at 10 a.m. Members only.
Pool lessons — Available for all members. Call 203-924-9324 to make an appointment, or just come in and play if you already know how.
Lion’s International Recycle for Sight and Hearing Project — The senior center is a drop off site for old eyeglasses and hearing aids.

Emergency light flashers — The center provides flashing lights to help ambulance crews, police and firefighters locate homes more quickly in the event of an emergency. Supplies of the flashers are limited and available only to Shelton residents who are 55 and older. Information: 203-924-9324.
All individuals attending the senior center for activities scheduled in the monthly membership newsletter are required to be current members of the center. Members who participate in any program should sign in on the attendance sheet provided by the instructor and include their membership number. All participants need to complete a medical and physical activity consent form. If an event allows non-members to attend, it will be announced.
