Events at the senior center include book club, dancing and more

The Shelton Senior Center offers classes, workshops and support to area seniors. The center is located at 81 Wheeler Street. Information: 203-924-9324. Some classes are for members only; others are for members and non-members alike.

Book club — Meets Friday, May 10, 1 p.m. Book for May: The Columbus Affair by Steve Barry; June, The Impeachment of Abraham Lincoln by Stephen Carter; and  summer read is The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton. Members only.

Hot topics with Janet Wheeler — Held on the second Tuesday of each month, beginning Tuesday, May 14, at 10:30 a.m.

Membership meeting — Held Friday, May 24 at 10:30 a.m.  All members welcome.

May Birthday Party — Held Friday, May 24, 1 p.m., $4. Music by Vinnie Carr. Tickets will be sold up until the Wednesday at noon before the party.

Elder law program — Tuesday, May 28, at 10 a.m., informational session about How Do We Choose — Home, Assisted Living or Nursing Home. Attorney Drazen has earned the distinction of becoming a Certified Elder Law Attorney from the National Elder Law Foundation, as authorized by the American Bar Association. Non-members welcome.

Hearing maintenance — Precision Hearing Specialists provide members with free hearing maintenance at the center the fourth Tuesday of each month, from 10:30 to noon. This month is May 28. Appointments are necessary, call 203-381-9555 to schedule. Non-members welcome.

Band jam — Music and dancing Tuesdays at 1 p.m.

Caregiver sessions — Held Thursday, May 16, 5:30 p.m., at the Seymour Senior Center, 20 Pine Street, Seymour. The evening’s topic is Elder Law presented by Karen A. Fisher, LLC, attorney at law in Seymour. A light supper will provided. Call the Shelton Senior Center to register. Reservations will be taken up to the Tuesday before the event.

AARP Chapter 3240 — Meets Tuesday, May 21, at 1:30 p.m. J. Misencik Photography showcase the inside of the Palace and Majestic theaters located in downtown Bridgeport. Guests are invited. Information: Jim Kelly at 203-925-1200 or

Father’s Day party — Friday, June 14, at noon, for a luncheon buffet. Tickets available Friday, May 24, at the reception desk from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at any time, after the first selling day. Tickets will be sold up until the Wednesday at noon before the party. Music by Vinnie Carr. Cost: $15. Father of the Year 2013 will be announced.

Senior health and wellness fair  — Wednesday, June 19, State Sen. Kevin Kelly and staff will host at the center. Health screenings and up-to date information about programs available for seniors will be available. More information to follow.

June Birthday Party — Held Friday, June 28, 1 p.m. Cost: $4. Music by Vivian Blake. Tickets on sale at the reception desk Friday, June 3, 9:30 to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.  Tickets will be sold up until the Wednesday at noon before the party.

Crafting donations — The quilting class is in need of material that is 100 % cotton — all colors and patterns. The center is looking for donations of yarn for the knitting and crochet groups.

Blood pressure screening — The Emergency Care Institute of Bridgeport Hospital will conduct blood pressure screenings at the senior center on the fourth Monday of each month from noon to 2 p.m. This month’s screening is May 28. Non-members welcome.

Square dancing — Held Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. New dancers welcome.

Games — Wii bowling, Thursdays at 2 p.m. Bingo, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 1 p.m. in the Bingo Room. Scrabble, Wednesdays at 10 a.m. Members only.

Pool lessons — Available for men and women. Call 203-924-9324 to make an appointment, or just come in and play if you already know how. Members only.

Lion’s International Recycle for Sight and Hearing Project — The senior center is a drop off site for old eyeglasses and hearing aids.

Emergency light flashers — The center provides flashing lights to help ambulance crews, police and firefighters locate homes more quickly in the event of an emergency. Supplies of the flashers are limited and available only to Shelton residents who are 55 and older. Information: 203-924-9324.
