Fall foliage

The temperatures are beginning to drop and so are the leaves on the trees, which means that summer is officially gone and Fall is upon us.

Although it may have come sooner than some may have wanted, there are plenty of beautiful things that come along with this time of year. Between the football, the scenery change, and opportunities for young kids to have fun there’s really a lot to look forward to.

It’s difficult not to smile or reflect back to your younger years when you begin to see stores put up their Halloween decorations and children scrambling to decide who they want to dress up as for the year. In Shelton especially, Trick or Trunk is a huge attraction at the Shelton Intermediate School and provides kids with a safe and fun opportunity to trick or treat with their friends and see other people dressed up as some of their favorite characters.

Parents have the luxury of not having to drive their kids around or walk all over the neighborhood as a convenient line of decorated cars are parked in the lot for their kids to visit and pick up candy from. It’s borderline genius.

Looking at the season as a whole, one of the favorite aspects of it is football is back and in full swing. Not only is it a fun time for the family to sit down every Monday, Thursday, or Sunday and watch their favorite team, but it’s also a great opportunity to get out in the yard or your local open field and go play with your friends.

It’s hard not to think about the other big holiday that takes place later in the year and is known for bringing families together, Thanksgiving. It’s also a great time to check out the Gaels take on their cross town Derby rivals. Aside from football, there’s also the large mounds of food, endless leftovers and the discounted shopping that takes place the day after.

While it’s always easy to get caught up in the stress from work or school, this is a beautiful time of year to appreciate loved ones and the simple things. If you have kids, take them outside to jump in a pile of leaves, but watch for ticks. If you’re older maybe take a trip down to the city’s reservoir to admire the scenery or visit take a walk downtown to one of the handmade markets in the Conti building on Howe Ave.

Even though it’s much cooler outside, it’s a great time to live in Shelton.
