They are now flattening dirt and what appears to be a sand-like material to create a surface where the brick pavers will be installed to create a walking surface.
The new walking path is expected to be completed sometime this spring. It will not be connected to the existing Riverwalk in Veterans Memorial Park, but the new section should eventually extend to the end of Canal Street near the dam entrance.
The brick walkway will start on Canal Street between the Avalon and Birmingham structures, then turn north to go in back of Avalon. Known as Phase Two, the new section will be about 900 linear feet long and about 10 feet wide in most places.
Workers previously have installed light-pole bases and done some grading, drainage and related site work. Handling the construction is Vaz Quality Works of Bridgeport.
The existing Riverwalk has become a popular place for people to stroll in the downtown area, offering views of the Housatonic River and Derby’s central business district.
