Fourth grader unites community to support heart health
One Shelton elementary school student has recently given her time toward raising money for the American Heart Association in honor of her late uncle.
Lia Monteiro, 9, of Mohegan School in Shelton remains committed to raising money for the American Heart Association’s annual Jump Rope for Heart fund-raiser in tribute to her uncle, who died at the age of 38 from heart disease.
In her time at Mohegan School, Lia has raised well over $5,000 for the cause.
“I like getting my family and friends together to remember my uncle while supporting a good cause,’ said Lia.
With the support of her fourth grade friends, Lia said, she sold raffle tickets for a chance to win prizes donated by community partners who supported her fund-raising efforts. Lia said local businesses and companies such as Amazon.com, Donut Crazy, Dunkin’ Donuts, Giove’s, Jones Winery, PEZ Candy, Rockin’ Jump, Shelton Rinks, and Quassy Amusement Park all donated raffle prizes, which contributed to the number of people willing to purchase tickets.
“Lia has learned how to rally others for a cause, and has learned that others, even community businesses, will stand behind her as long as she believes she has a cause worth fighting for,” said C’s mother, who supports her daughter’s fund-raising endeavors.
Mohegan School has set a school-wide fund-raising goal of $19,500 for this year.
“We were in the top five in the state last year,” said Mohegan physical education teacher David Blackmore, who was a special guest at Lia’s fund-raising event.
The Jump Rope for Heart fund-raiser will culminate with a jump rope event at Mohegan School later this month. Jump Rope for Heart raises money for ongoing cardiovascular research and educational programs to support children with cardiovascular disease and to educate all children about the importance of exercise to maintain a healthy heart.
