Health District plans flu vaccine clinic in Shelton
The Naugatuck Valley Health District (NVHD) will offer influenza vaccine clinics to local residents in October and November.
In Shelton, the clinic will take place Tuesday, Oct. 8 from 9-11 a.m. at the Shelton Senior Center. No appointments are necessary.
Other clinics will be held in Derby, Ansonia, Seymour, Beacon Falls and Naugatuck.
Flu vaccine for adults and children also will be available by appointment during the district's immunization clinics on Tuesdays from 1-3 p.m. at the district office, 98 Bank St., Seymour.
Flu vaccination (the shot or nasal spray) is now recommended for everyone 6 months of age or older.
What insurance plans are accepted
NVHD will accept Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield, ConnectiCare, Cigna and Medicare Part B if it is the primary insurance plan. Clinic attendees should bring all of their insurance cards to better verify their eligibility for flu vaccine coverage by their insurer.
Medicare HMOs, United and Oxford Health Care will not be accepted this year.
The cost of the flu vaccine for those with other forms of insurance is $20, payable by cash, check, Visa or MasterCard. All clinic attendees should wear loose-fitting clothes with short sleeves.
Serving the elderly homebound
Elderly homebound individuals who reside in district towns and who cannot attend any of the clinics should call NVHD at 203-881-3255 to make arrangements for a nurse to administer the vaccine at home. Certain days scheduled for each town. These individuals should have permission from their physicians to get the vaccine.
The 2013-14 trivalent influenza vaccine is made from the following three viruses: an A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)-like virus; an A(H3N2) virus like the A/Victoria/361/2011 virus; and a B/Massachusetts/2/2012-like virus.
