Hula hoop exercise classes starting
BringtheHoopla is offering an eight-week class focusing on all elements of hooping — from basic movement in your hoop to all levels of hoop dance.
"Learning hoop is a journey that teaches coordination, balance, self-expression and self-confidence," said Nicole Heriot Mikula, owner of BringtheHoopla.
The class will be Thursdays, 4:45-5:45 p.m., beginning April 3. Cost is $45.
Register at the Shelton Community Center, 41 Church Street.
BringtheHoopla goes to schools, family nights and other events, combining physical education with a fun activity for everyone.
They began making custom designed hula-hoops and quickly grew the business to focus on education, fitness, wellness and entertainment.
Their hula hooping classes and programs are based on grade level. For pre-kindergarten through grade 2, they have created a multi function class combining physical education and cognitive learning skills. They focus on colors, counting, balance, rhythm, patterns and movement. They also incorporate hand-eye coordination, stretching and cardio.
In grades 3 through 12, the program focuses on hoop as a form of a fun and healthy activity while teaching on and off body techniques with the hoop and incorporating all facets of physical education, including obstacle courses and relay races.
One of the benefits of the program is that hooping is a low aerobic exercise for all abilities and levels.
“We strive to create positive programs where we discuss health and wellness, and a welcoming environment where we build self-confidence and learn to love ourselves for exactly who we are,” Heriot Mikula said. “Everyone can hoop. It increases flexibility, focus, stamina while strengthening your entire core and burning calories.”
