Huntington Fire breaks ground on memorial project
Unsettled weather Sunday didn’t stop members of Huntington Fire Company No. 3 from getting to work on the department’s memorial project.
The brick memorial, to be located in front of the station on the Huntington Green, will honor all who have served. It also marks a major anniversary for the all-volunteer fire company, which has been “roundin’ the green since 1919.”
“One-hundred years ago a group of people got together to help the community,” Huntington Fire Company President Robert Araujo said. “We’re just honoring that legacy.”
It’s an effort the fire company wants the entire community to support through the “Buy a Brick” campaign. Each brick, starting at $100, will be part of the memorial, featuring a personally engraved name or message. Residents can buy the bricks to remember a loved one or honor a friend or family member, Fire Captain Donald Zak said. Bricks can also mark a special anniversary and demonstrate support on behalf of a group or business, according Huntington Fire.
“It’s something we always wanted to do to give back to the people who have served,” Zak said. “A lot of people have been ordering the bricks in honor of a loved one. So far, we have about 30 orders on the list but we’d like to get as many as possible.”
Thanks to the campaign message spreading online, orders have come in from outside of Shelton, including a recent order from New Hampshire, Zak said.
Proceeds will go back to support the fire company continuing for another 100 years, according to members.
They hope to complete the project by October, Zak said. When finished, the brick memorial will be surrounded by benches and three flag poles. A large rock, pulled from the ground when Huntington Station was built in 1969, will be moved over from its current spot, in order to be part of the memorial.
As was the case on Sunday, construction and landscaping labor is being done by the fire company’s volunteer members.
“Everyone is pitching in to help,” Zak said.
Bricks for the memorial can be ordered online at polarengraving.com/huntingtonfirecompany. A 4x8 brick with engraved text is $100 and $110 with clip art of logos. An 8x8 brick option is available for $175-$185. Orders can be placed directly on the engraving website.
