Man arrested for breaking into Rita’s Italian Ice

Stratford Police Department arrested a man for breaking and entering into Rita’s Italian Ice on River Road in Shelton early Thursday morning.

Stratford Police arrested Steven Carloto, 48, after his BMW 3 series was identified as a match to the vehicle used by the suspect in the RIta’s burglary. Carloto was charged with burglary 3rd, larceny 4th, criminal mischief 2nd and possession of burglar tools.

Shelton patrol officers responded to a burglar alarm at Rita’s on River Road at around 3:30 a.m. Thursday morning and discovered the front door lock damaged and the safe missing from the business.

The surveillance video showed the burglar driving a dark BMW 3 series. Later that day the Stratford Police Department stopped said vehicle and Carloto was arrested on an unrelated arrest warrant. Carloto had coin rolls from Rita’s and burglar tools in the vehicle at the time, according to Shelton Police.

Carloto is a suspect in other commercial burglaries in Shelton and surrounding towns. More arrests are expected in the future.
