Memorial tribute to include Shelton man

A fallen Shelton hero will be among those honored in September as part of an annual tribute.

Military personnel who have been killed in combat and their families will be part of the Fallen Heroes Memorial Tribute, Gold Star Mothers and Families Weekend. U.S. Army Sgt. Robert A. Elia of Shelton will be among the fallen honored. Elia served in Vietnam and was killed when he was 21.

The event is held on Saturday, Sept. 29, at Indian Ledge Park in Trumbull. The event begins at 12:30 p.m. with the Gold Star Ceremony at 1 p.m. This is the largest gathering of Gold Star Families in the state.

The event features a performance by the U.S. Coast Guard band. The Tony Ferrigno Band will also perform.

The Connecticut Fallen Heroes Foundation raises funds and plans for the annual tribute. The families of military members who died in combat or as a result of an injury in combat are called Gold Star families.
